June 11: Objectivity?
Objectivity
Whats Happening?
- The pit bull is licking the bunny and is nudging the bunny.
- The bunny seems to keep inching away when the pit bull keeps interacting with it.
Interpretation of Animal Behavior
From the video, I interpret the actions of the pit bull in various ways:
- The pit bull could be licking the bunny because it wants to eat the bunny. However the only reason its not is because its owner is present (filming) and it knows that it's not suppose to or the owner would punish him.
- The pit bull could be feeling a maternal instinct towards the bunny because it is much smaller and younger so it could be trying to clean the bunny like it would to its own kids (showing affection).
- Through research, I realized that pit bull's clean themselves by applying their own spit all over their body. Therefore, the pit bull may just be cleaning the bunny just because it seems dirty to the pit bull.
I base these interpretations on the observation's I observed when watching the video and what I think is happening (my opinion). For my last interpretation I based it off a fact I found through research on google. The second interpretation came from discussing different ideas with the people beside me.
Perspective
Value perspectives come in play when you make interpretations of the animals behavior. For example, if you like pit bulls and think they are sweet, your interpretation of the video may be leaning towards the perspective that the pit bull is licking the bunny because it feels a maternal feelings towards it. However, if you see pit bulls as dangerous, scary dogs, you may think the pit bull is licking the bunny because it wants to eat it. It all depends on your specific values and judgments that help you come up with an interpretation.
Improvements
To improve the objectivity of the experiment, I would remove the human from sight of the pit bull and bunny. I would set up a camera in the room and make sure the pit bull cannot see the human in any way. This way, we can make sure the human is not affecting the results of the experiment or changing the way the pit bull would act in the absence of the human.
