June 18: Skills
Dr. Schuman Machine Learning
In class, Dr, Schuman, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Tennessee came in to talk about her research and expand on machine learning and ways to create machine learning algorithms.
Summary
To give a summary of what was discussed in the lecture, she went over what machine learning is and discussed her research including talking about her work on an autonomous car. I learned that machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence where computers learn from data to make decisions or predictions without being programmed. To create machine learning algorithms, you can start with data collection and preprocessing, choose a model, train the model on the data, and then evaluate its performance. Tools like Python libraries and frameworks can help simplify this process.
Using Information In School
My learning and understanding that machine learning involves computers learning from data to make decisions or predictions on their own can help me in school. I can use this knowledge to develop projects like creating predictive models using Python libraries. This lecture also can help me understand real-world applications, such as working on autonomous vehicle technology and give me a better background information for high level computer science courses that can be taken at my school.
