June 28: OP-ED

Opinion Essay: Imagine you live in a world where genetic diseases are eliminated, crops are resistant to climate change, and humans can tailor their own genetic makeup. While this might sound like science fiction, advancements in biotechnology and genetic engineering, particularly through tools like CRISPR, are bringing us closer to this reality. However, many people are against advancements in these fields because of the ethical issues that arise, including potential for unequal access to genetic enhancements, the argument that it's ‘dehumanizing’ , etc. Even though the moral dilemmas are important to consider, research and discoveries that come out of these fields of science have a significantly positive impact on many areas of work, including crops/farming and medical fields and help us as humans advance to a more sophisticated society.  Genetic engineering has propelled many discoveries in the medical field. For example, according to SCISPAGE ,  advancements include the d...

June 17: Visualization and AI Overview

Image
Visualization and AI Overview  Data Visualization  In class, we had to chose one data visualization task to complete. I did the excel visualization dashboard and learned how to use excel to create a sales dashboard and figured out how to make in interactive through watching video. First, I constructed the dashboard dynamic using hyperlink to navigate to the different tabs.  Then, I built the overall structure by using shapes and icons. After, I created all of the charts and visuals which include a map chart, radar chart, line chart, doughnut chart, KPIs, and more by using the inputs tab (picture above). Finally, I customized the visuals, changed the fonts and colors to match the theme, and added them to the dashboard. AI Overview   AI stands for Artificial Intelligence and it is an evolving technology that tries to simulate human intelligence using machines. In other words, AI is a machine's ability to perform the cognitive functions  such as perceiving, reaso...

June 14: CAFOs

Image
CAFOs In class, we discussed the situation with CAFOs.  CAFO stands for Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations and they are agricultural meat, dairy, or egg facilities where animals are kept and raised in confinement. The environment of these facilities are usually very poor and have harsh conditions for the animals. We got split into groups (my group was Devi, Qiqi, Haley, Annelyn, and me) and we were told to argue and come up for points on why CAFO is negative and why these facilities should be shut down and not exist anymore.  Reasoning:  Through research and discussion, here are a few summed up points of what our discussion was and why we said CAFOs should be shut down: Increases rate of death in humans when they eat processed meat that comes from CAFO. Large CAFOs decrease economic activities in rural communities and hurt small businesses. Market prices of plant based products are cheaper compared to processed food, but the cost of the labor in the factory for t...

Intro to Coding: Background Info on Coding: Before starting on coding today in class, I had very little experience with coding and using technology in general. The only time I had practice with coding was in middle school. All I knew was that coding was a sequence of instructions programmed into a computer for it to perform a certain task. I also knew they were different coding 'languages' like python, etc.                                                                              Today's Project: Out of the three options given, I chose the beginner project (Learn Python - From the beginning!) because I had no previous experience with coding. We were to complete 6 interactive lessons that teach us how to use Python and help in learning how to code. I was able to complete three lessons but stil...
